Deb Kozak is the first woman to serve as Mayor of the City of Nelson. During Deb’s three terms on City Council she became the President of the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments. Deb also chairs the Columbia River Treaty Local Governments Committee and is passionate about the future of the Columbia Basin. She has engaged in conversations with elected representatives and citizens on both sides of the border with the intention to promote understanding of issues and cooperation between communities and nations. In her capacity as mayor, Deb is a Director of the Regional District of Central Kootenay and serves on the Nelson and District Recreation Commission. She is one of the founding members of the Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership. Deb has worked in both the private and non-profit sectors and has served on volunteer organizations at local, provincial and national levels. Deb was born and raised in Saskatchewan, and completed her education in Saskatoon.  She has lived in Nelson for over 30 years, where she and her husband Peter raised two children, Terry and Laura. In 2014, the family joyfully welcomed granddaughter Aizlinn.
